We design with intention to incorporate old and new techniques in our pieces, recycling used textile when possible, but also ensuring that weavers and artisans find purpose in continuing their skills with pride. The creation of new textile is imperative to the continuation – and therefore preservation – of Mayan culture and art. In creating a broader market for their skills, and an understanding and appreciation of the importance and significance of their work, these communities will continue to practice their culture’s beautiful craft. When utilizing recycled or vintage pieces in our designs, we source directly from the Mayan community and original artists when possible. By doing this, we can know that the owners receive a fair and dignified price. We deeply value our partnerships and relationships. Without them we wouldn’t be possible. Together we collaborate in the spirit of mutual respect as we not only celebrate Mayan culture, but proactively work to also honor the future of our planet.
At Bonhomia, we celebrate meaningful partnerships with small, independent workshops within rural Guatemala and women’s art cooperatives within Mayan communities. Our goal is to support local workshops that are run by independent artists and local business owners because we believe that this is where the most direct impact is made. All of our artisans receive fair wages and flexible working conditions, working from home when possible. Small business has the power to create incredible change within communities and we aim to support and empower positive growth and cultural preservation. When artisans know that their skills are appreciated and valued, they will continue to pass their knowledge to future generations. This is very important to us. Together we can make a difference, even in a small way, to create a lasting social impact and enable artisans to work in a sustainable way for their income. And that is something we can all feel good about.

I grew up as a rural Kentucky farm girl with an appreciation for visual, textile and woven arts at a young age. This love was only fueled as I became involved in the fashion community in my 20’s as a commercial stylist. With the evidence of the horrors of ‘fast-fashion’ obvious to any who chose to see, I knew there was a better and more conscious way to do things. A way that was transparent and ethical. As I traveled to Guatemala nearly a decade later and was able to touch the incredible embroidered works of art that I had admired for so long, I met their makers and learned more about the struggles that the artists and craftsman directly face – not only in daily life, but culturally. It was time to join forces to build something beautiful, together.
Bonhomía is the culmination of the creative spirit and kind nature that is instilled within every piece that our artisans make. It is about creating beautiful things with a soul and a story that transcends time and trends. I feel strongly about preserving our partner’s skills and traditions. This is why we work in small batches, believe in quality over quantity, and work to responsibly utilize vintage Mayan textile within our designs when possible. We are thoughtfully building this brand one step at a time, learning more with every turn. We are truly honored that you have stopped by and hope you will follow along with our journey as it continues to grow.
With endless gratitude,
Catherine
